In the various information I consumed while looking up information about Mr. Yoshino I was very impressed with him. Kenji Yoshino (a gay man) is the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Constitutional Law at the NYU School of Law. Prior to moving to NYU, he was the inaugural Guido Calabresi Professor of Law and Deputy Dean of Intellectual Life at Yale Law School, where he taught from 1998 to 2008. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, took a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, and earned his law degree at Yale Law School.
In one of his talks with Charlie Rose (the Charlie Rose Show) Mr. Yoshino mentions how, while at Oxford, he went to a chapel and prayed to not be gay. I was personally blown away by this. Even Charlie mentioned on his show that he was a bit surprised.
I was further impressed with Mr. Yoshino’s reply when he stated “book smarts are over rated.”
Here is a man that is very highly intelligent, yet because of his life experiences, at that particular moment, he felt he could never be a happy gay man and begged to be different.
This fact, by itself, shows the devastation caused growing up a LGBT community member in a world which is intolerant, disapproving and damning!
